Alan Devonshire’s Maidenhead United career in numbers – Football in Berkshire

Alan Devonshire’s tenure as Maidenhead United manager will end on Saturday afternoon, his 913th game in charge of the Magpies.

Appointed for the first time to the York Road hot seat in the summer of 1996 to succeed ex-player John Watt, Dev initially went into a joint partnership with ex-QPR man Martyn Busby at the Isthmian League Division 1 side (step 3 equivalent today).

Busby walked away in March 1997 and Devonshire went solo. Within a matter of weeks he had won United’s first first-team silverware since 1970 as Maidenhead picked up the Isthmian League Full Members Cup with a 3-0 ‘giant killing’ victory over Premier division side Aylesbury at Marlow. This was the first of five trophies won by Dev from eight cup finals; he led Maidenhead to the first of four county cup successes in 1998 and when his side were promoted from the Isthmian League division 1 in 2000 they were narrowly beaten in extra time by Premier division side Farnborough in the Isthmian League Cup final.

That promotion in 1999/00 – after an agonising ear-miss in his first full solo season in 1997/98 – took United to the Isthmian Premier league for the first time since the club joined the league in 1973. Taking the club to the highest level they had ever reached in the pyramid, he repeated the trick when reappointed in 2015 – after success at both Hampton & Richmond and Braintree Town – winning the National League South the following season with an incredible 98 points, averaging 2.3 points per game across what was then a 42-game season as Maidenhead reached Step 1 for the first time ever.

Eight seasons as a part-time team in the National League saw a few lows but many more highs as Maidenhead competed against a good many former EFL sides before losing their fight to remain in the league on the final day of 2024/25 by just a single point.
